Intriguing are the initial sequences of the film, in which the protagonist’s mother berates him on his answering machine about how miserable his life and that of his wife are. At this juncture, the protagonist initially encounters his doppelganger and initiates an inquiry into him.
This results in the identification of a clandestine subterranean nightclub where men observe women masturbating and, in a scene that is especially unsettling, a woman is seen subduing a tarantula the size of a room with her platform high heels. The lookmovies film enters a more psychologically distressing zone at this juncture.
Although the film may occasionally appear to be a jumbled Kafkaesque account of an individual confronting the preposterous, its true nature lies in the hero’s ethical transformation when confronted with adversity. The significance of the concept that control is paramount and that dictatorships attempt to subdue individuals into believing they are in paradise when, in reality, they are not truths, truths supersedes the incorporation of spider-women.
2. Maps to the Stars
The narrative of the Hollywood film is that of a declining actress who decides to employ an assistant. Agatha, the recently hired assistant, is a burnt-scarred individual who possesses an enigmatic past and a vacant gaze that conveys contradictory intentions to the more sociable members of her employer’s social circle. Eventually, Havana Segrand (portrayed by Julianne Moore), who resembles the evil stepsister of Lindsay Lohan and is tormented by her own waning past, befriends Agatha.
The director of this scathing film, David Cronenberg, issues a scathing indictment of the nefarious appeal that riches and fame possess. It is a somber depiction of Hollywood that lacks perspective, is airless, and is content with itself. It is a meticulous satire that avoids ostentation and accomplishes something that films such as Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street are unable to. Although the film contains caustic asides and sardonic humor, its success stems from its unabashed exploration of its interior turmoil.

The Shape of Things tells the story of two alienated neighbors who forge an unlikely connection through written correspondence. Neil LaBute, who wrote and directed this movie, returns to his nasty habits after a foray into romance with last year’s Possession. He tries to freshen up the premise by making Adam female but, except for a few new twists and the swapping of genders in the main characters, this is essentially a one-trick pony that telegraphs its twist ending within its first ten minutes.
